Faith Development in relation to Brain Development

Here are some of the big ideas from our discussion on helping adolescents develop faith in light of their brain development.

  • Helping students wrestle with connecting concepts is helpful for making connections in their brain
  • Lecture style teaching might be the least effective for adolescence. (and probably adults)
  • Our churches develop our expectations around 40 year old adults and we’ve placed the same expectations on 15 year olds
  • 15-year-olds aren’t being disingenuous with their inconsistency. Adults usually are
  • A disciples isn’t one who has arrived, it is one who is on a journey
  • By making a singular program that students move through, we’ll miss 80% of the students
  • We’ve got to create a space where students can be honest
  • We’re youth pastors and we tend to do too much talking. And we’re uncomfortable with silence

Great question: I think it warrants another blog post.
