A couple of days ago, there was some pretty great discussion happening around my post about my Monday sabbath. Great comments on the blog, but also some interesting dialog on twitter (one pastor was let go of from his previous church because he and his family held to the Sabbath on Saturdays. Yikes!)
I think I know why people respond so well when I talk about Sabbath (other than the fact that I’m a magnificent writer who is to blogging what Ali was to boxing).
We’re tired. More and more people I talk to, when I say, “How are you doing?” respond with, “I’m good. I’m tired.” We’re too busy. We’re spread so thin doing stuff we don’t want to do that we’re left with neither the time nor energy to do what we truly, deeply want to do.
There are too high of expectations and demands on our life. We have to produce at work, at home, at school, at church, and with friends. And even beyond that, we have to be available on twitter, facebook, email, and cell phones.
Sabbath is rest. Deep rest. Rest in zero expectations. People like that. People enjoy it. It’s attractive. It’s sexy.
