God & Money

No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” ~Jesus~

Jesus didn’t say it was hard for a person to chase after both money and God, he said “YOU CANNOT.”

Jesus didn’t say that it was really simple for financially sound individuals to understand His kingdom. Actually, Jesus taught that it is easier for a donkey to go through the eye of a needle.

So when you wake up in the morning to head to work, quesiton what you’re serving. Wrestle with the reality you live in. Sit in the tension that, though you may treasure Christ dearly, you CANNOT serve both him and the mighty dollar.

  1. Matt Flinner says:

I like to attach the passage in Luke where Jesus tells us not to judge others because I am VERY good at pointing out how other people serve money (big houses, nice cars, etc.). But then I have to look at my own life, and even though I don’t have a mansion or Benz, I tend to rely on my paycheck rather than God’s faithfulness. Thanks for the good post and thoughts. I think.

  2. Yep. This passage has taken on more and more meaning to me as I dive into what it means to be in debt. I very much feel the effects of what debt does to a person. As proverbs says it, the borrowers becomes a slave to the lender. Debt keeps me from being able to serve God constantly and attentively in the present because I have to pay my debts…Lame.

Pray that when the Lord allows me to be free from this sin, I will use the freedom over my finances for Him.
